Pards,
Spent 4 days helping the Deadwood Drifters to set up this outstanding 2-day match, and got my registration comped. Every G-o-H match is based on the movie "High Plains Drifter", hence the name.
It was one outstanding match -- 12 stages in two days. Targets included swingers (both targets and "obscurers"), poppers, wig-wags, "explosions", Callie's -- ah -- comeuppance, the notorious bathtub scene, and the dreaded Texas Star. I expended 240 rounds of .45 Colt ammo in rifle and pistols, and 52 rounds of 12-gauge in my hammered side-by-side. Pardon the expression, but it was a BLAST!
AND, I came away with the first-place plaque in the Senior Duelist category! Not bad for an old fart who only shot one other match since August 2009!
Pics, if any, will be posted later. |

Ahhh - a whole new language
Anybody got the faintest clue what the heck NE is talking about?
I got good & lost after "Targets included..."
Translator, front & center.
But it sounds like fun, anyway |

It was pretty much Hindi to me as well, NE will have to expand and define, as well as post some pictures!

I got lost after "swingers" although I certainly admired the sentiment of "swingers" as targets.
But I've always wanted to be called "Pard" ...the best part of my childhood was spent reading and rereading the "Red Ryder" comic books. _________________ Tinpig |

Sorry about that, pards. Translation follows:
Swingers (both targets and "obscurers") -- items that are suspended from above and, when released, swing from left to right or vice versa.
Obscurers -- Typically made of cardboard, these are intended to repeatedly hide and reveal one or more targets.
Poppers -- knockdown targets that, when hit, throw another target into the air. These can be clay pigeons, cans, or what-have-you.
Wig-wags -- similar to swingers, except they're suspended from below, with a weight on the other end of the pendulum. When released, they also swing from left to right or vice versa. Wig-wags can also be targets or obscurers.
"Explosions" -- Uses a device that is similar to a small mortar or cannon. It uses a blank shotgun shell to launch something into the air. In this case, the projectile was a small styrofoam cup loaded with chalk dust and shredded newspaper. It was actuated by shooting a knockdown target, and it generated a rather convincing debris cloud that momentarily obscured three targets.
Callie's -- ah -- comeuppance -- you have to know the movie.
The notorious bathtub scene -- In the movie, Callie tries to shoot Clint while he's in the bathtub. In our case, we used a large steel target directly over a filled bathtub, with the face angled down to throw the lead fragments into the water, thereby making rather dramatic splashes.
The dreaded Texas Star -- A five-armed device that freely rotates around its center. Each arm is tipped with a steel target that falls off when hit. Each hit changes the Star's balance and center of gravity, thereby causing it to rotate. In order, from easiest to most difficult, it can be shot with the shotgun, rifle, or pistol. In our case, one started with the rifle, then used the shotgun to knock off any "survivors" before moving on to the regular shotgun targets.
Does this help? |

Be careful, wbb, or the next thing you know you'll be knee-deep in cowboy action shooting. |

Well, I still have the hats & the boots & the spurs, and the big silver belt buckles with critters on them
But I doubt the belts, with my name embossed thereon, will fit anymore
But CAS is 1860's cowboy not 1960's cowboy, right?
Shucks, missed another fashion wave |

Yup, from the end of the Civil War up to 1899 or so. I do the early- to mid-1870's because I shoot Remington New Model Army pistols with cartridge conversion cylinders, and my back-up pistols are Richards-Mason conversions of the 1851 Navy. |

Here are some pics of me, taken on Stage 8. I've been told that more are on the way, and that there may even be a video of me shooting a stage. (I'm gonna watch that video very carefully before deciding whether to post it here... )
Here we are discussing the stage instructions. From left to right: Dr. George, Sgt. Major O'Donnell, El Roberto, moi, and Max Doolin.
Same deal, same shooters.
Ready to shoot the stage.
Engaging the shotgun targets. The lady standing behind me is the Range Officer/Timer, Lusty Lil. The guy in the red shirt and yellow bandana is Currahee, another good friend.
Transitioning from Shotgun to Rifle. You can see my shotgun lying on the bar in the "saloon". Again, Lusty Lil and Currahee.
Engaging the rifle targets. This was a tricky set-up. 1. Shoot a knockdown to release the swinger. 2. Shoot the swinger, then the three stationary targets just below the swinger, in a circular pattern. 3. Repeat twice. (This means you have to engage the swinging target three times)
Do you remember Guy Madison as Wild Bill Hickock, and Andy Devine as Jingles?
Well, after reviewing these pics (particularly when I'm in profile), I'm thinking of changing my alias to "Jangles"... |

"Hey, Wild Bill, wait for me!!!!"
I guess Buckshot needed a few sash weights in his saddle bags to give Joker a fair race.
That does look like a lot of fun. _________________ Tinpig |

Here's the link to a video of me shooting a stage. You have to have a Facebook account to access it.
http://www.facebook.com/p.php?i=100000017468623&k=Z6E3Y5WZRZXOY1GJPB63QUQTRWBC3TZNUWGRCDTEXT&oid=442963131240
This was actually my second-best stage of the match. This is the one where "Clint" is in the bathtub. My only "bobble" was with the shotgun at the end. In getting ready to shoot the third and fourth targets, my initial effort to cock the right-side hammer failed. I had to pause for a couple of seconds to cock it. |

Video didn't work even when logged into facebook. What is your handle over there? Mine is Christopher Braeske, of course.

Went over to your profile page on Facebook and saw it.
That was beautiful, Glenn, like music! Seriously, nice shooting with the SA guns, something I am not that familiar with.
Shooting gongs like that looks like a lot of fun, and you definitely have a lot of skill with your cowboy guns.

| Those buckskins are way too clean. They need one or two prone stages and one or two crawling stages. You know, like under a line of horses and crawl up to the watering trough and shoot from the prone. That will fix them skins. kwg |

Here's my trophy. The "flames" look pretty good, don't they? They ought to, 'cause I helped make 'em... (They're made from used IPSC targets, hence the bullet holes.)

Photobucket is quite user-friendly, as long as you can point and click. Any shooter who can't do that is in deep, ah, kimchee. _________________ "That's my opinion -- oughta be yours."

I certainly won't try a shootout with Glenn using SA guns anytime soon. That video was great!

Hi Nighteyes,
Very nice picture post ! You did very well!
I went to a few matchs with some of the guys & ladies I know. it looks like lots fun. The cost for all the stuff made me thing twice about it!
I was told ,I could use my Nagant revolvers if I removed the double action fly!
Best,

That would depend on the specific CAS sport you wanted to shoot -- there is more than one. I shoot both SASS and Western 3-Gun, and have investigated NCOWS. Some CAS organizations have more stringent regulations than others. I don't pretend to know all of them, of course.
Was there a single-action Nagant revolver available and in use in the Old West before 1900? Did it look like yours? If the answer to both is "yes", you'd have no problem shooting any of the CAS disciplines. If the answer to the first question or the second question is "no", you might have a problem with some.
For example, the 1860 Henry rifle and its reproductions are legal in all the CAS sports.
On the other hand, the so-called "Henry Big Boy", a newcomer on the lever-action rifle scene, is legal in SASS and W3G, but strictly forbidden in NCOWS. Why? Because it isn't historically accurate -- it wasn't around in the Old West.
Its been my experience that, if cowboy shooters find out that you'd like to try the sport, you'll suddenly find yourself knee-deep in offers to loan you pistols, rifles, shotguns, gunbelts, holsters, etc. _________________ "That's my opinion -- oughta be yours."
